About this site

Hands holding an employment contract and an Acas leaflet.
Hands holding an employment contract and an Acas leaflet.

9 to Life explains UK employment rights from the employee's side, in plain English, with a focus on the dates and deadlines that actually determine whether a claim can be brought at all.

Why the focus on deadlines

Most UK employment content is written for employers managing compliance risk. The rules read differently from the other side of the desk, where the question isn't "how do we stay compliant" but "how long do I actually have to do something about this." That gap is what this site tries to close.

How we write

Legal and regulatory content here is checked against primary sources (legislation.gov.uk, gov.uk, Acas) where they exist. Employment law is genuinely complex and changes in stages rather than all at once; where we're not certain of an exact date or detail, we say so rather than guess.

How the site pays for itself

Some pages link to employment solicitors or services relevant to the situation being discussed, and the site may earn a referral fee if you engage one through a link here. The information doesn't change based on what pays.

Nothing on this site is a substitute for advice from Acas, a solicitor, or your union about your specific situation. Deadlines in particular are unforgiving; if yours is close, get advice rather than relying solely on a website.

Who this site isn't for

This covers England, Wales, and Scotland; Northern Ireland runs a separate industrial tribunal system with its own time limits, and content here doesn't apply there. It used to assume employee status and stop there. If you might be a worker rather than an employee, start with that page: holiday and the minimum wage can still apply when ordinary unfair dismissal cannot. Genuine self-employment is outside most of this site. Northern Ireland is a different tribunal system.
